Who Is Chulalongkorn? About The Fifth Siam Monarch
CHULALONGKORN – In this topic, we are going to know and learn about the fifth monarch of Siam named Chulalongkorn.
Also known as King Rama V ( จุฬาลงกรณ์ ) with the reigning title Phra Chula Chom Klao Chao Yu Hua, he is the fifth monarch (king) of the Rattanoskin Kingdom or Siam (former name of Thailand). Rama V is under the House of Chakri or the Chakri Dynasty, which began with the first monarch Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke.
He was born on September 20, 1853 in the Grand Palace, Bangkok, Siam. His father is the fourth Rama Mongkut and his mother is Debsitindra.
The Siamese know Rama V as the Phra Phuttha Chao Luang (พระพุทธเจ้าหลวง) or the Royal Buddha. His reign began on October 1 1868 and ended on October 23, 1910.
Rama V succeeded his father and was succeeded by Vajiravudh (Rama VI)
The fifth monarch is known to save Siam from being colonized via his policies and acts as the kingdom was threatened by Western expansionism.
His reforms, which were dedicated for Siam to survive in the face of colonialism, hence, he earned the title Phra Piya Maharat (พระปิยมหาราช) or the Great Beloved King.
