Supreme Court Bans Single-Use Plastics In Its Offices
SUPREME COURT – The Supreme Court has recently initiated a ban on unnecessary single-use plastics in its offices.
According to GMA, the court described it as an effort towards sustainability.
Maria Carina Cunanan, Deputy Clerk of Court and Chief Administrative Officer said in a memorandum on February 28 that the court is currently adopting the solid waste avoidance and waste management strategy of the NSWMC (National Solid Waste Management Commission ).
This is under the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The SC Public Information Office (PIO) said NSWMC’s Resolution No. 1363, series of 2020 states that among the “unnecessary single-use plastics” are the following:
- plastic cups lower than 0.2 mm in thickness
- plastic drinking straws
- plastic coffee stirrers
- plastic spoons, forks, and knives
- plastic labo
- thin-filmed sando bags lower than 15 microns
“This directive is consistent with the Court’s efforts towards sustainability,”
As per the report, Brian Keith Hosaka, court spokesman and PIO chief, clarified that the memo does not impose a sanction on violators.
“I guess when it comes to the environment it is a given that we should help and protect it,”
Hosaka added that the Manila Hall of Justice, which costs about ₱2.8 billion, is set to be complete by 2022. The new hall will have three interconnected structures which are green certified and environment-friendly.
