This brings the national total to 2,022 confirmed cases. Additionally, the South Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported an additional fatality bringing the death toll to 13.

According to a report from CNN, among the 256 new cases, 182 were from the city of Daegu, the epicenter of the virus outbreak in the country. Of the total number of cases, 1,314 came from the city.

Because of the unexpected spike in the number of confirmed cases, South Korea had been placed under RED Alert, with the government admitting they are in a critical stage of containment.

The spread of the virus in South Korea had been primarily linked to a religious sect in the city of Daegu. This was the following reports that a “superspreader” might have infected more than 37 members in the church.

As Korea continued to struggle with containing the virus, countries like the Philippines have banned travel to Korea’s popular Jeju Island. In addition, travelers from North Gyeongsang are not allowed to enter the country as part of the precautionary measures against the coronavirus.

On Friday, the Philippines would hold another meeting to discuss the potential of widening the travel ban to other major areas in South Korea. In line with this, the Philippines is also considering to included Japan in the travel ban.

This was also due to the rising number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the country. According to Health Secretary Duque III, if Japan’s number of local transmission of the virus continues, they would make the decision.
