Pinoy Para-swimmer Heads to 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games

A Pinoy para-swimmer secured his slot to be one of the athletes with a range of disabilities participates in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

According to the report of Manila Standard, para-swimmer Ernie Gawilan is the first Filipino athlete to qualify in the Paralympic Games. The International Paralympic Committee has granted an allocation to the 28-year-old Filipino swimmer to the August 25 to September 6 Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Philippine Para-swimming coach Tony Ong said the International Paralympic Committee has confirmed the qualification of Filipino swimmer due to the cancellation of some qualifying tournaments because of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak.

Gawilan, who was born in Davao City without legs and with an undeveloped left limb, was given one para-swimming slot. Gawilan earned the most of the qualifying points.

Gawilan, who first qualified at the 2016 Rio Paralympics, already earned Paralympic qualifying points at the 2018 Asian Para Games and 2019 World Para Championships in London.

Gawilan, a native of Davao City, first qualified in the 2016 Rio Paralympics. Meanwhile, three more para athletes — Garry Bejino, Arnel Anba, and Roland Sabido — are seeking to secure a ticket to the Tokyo Games, based on the report.
