PARTS OF A LEAF – In this topic, we are going to know the following parts of a leaf and the definition of each.
Leaves are called the kitchen of the plant since they are the main parts who are responsible for photosynthesis, a process where the plant produces its energy. Its green color is because of the presence of chlorophyll.
According to Toppr, it has two parts and one extra part for some plants:
- Lamina
- Also known as lamina, it is usually broad and flat. Here is where photosynthesis occurs. The lamina contains a prominent midrib at the center of the blade which is the main vein. From the midrib came branches called veins that are of different types depending upon the type of edges.
- The Petiole
- A stalk-like structure that connects the blade to the stem. It has tiny tubes that connect the veins on the blade to the stem. Few of those are able to transport water to the leaf while the other carry food away from it.
- Stipules
- Small flap-like structures that grow at the petiole base. There are some are usually protective in some plants when they protect the petiole and there are those who fall off once the petiole starts growing.
