ABSCBN Won’t Need NTC’s Provisional Authority Due To This – Lawmaker

ABSCBN will no longer need the provisional authority from NTC

The provisional authority from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will no longer be needed by ABSCBN due to this reason.

Cagayan de Oro’s 2nd District Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said that once both houses of Congress approve a joint resolution that will extend the franchise of the network, the media company does not need to go to NTC.

“No need because the sovereign power has been lodged on franchises by the Constitution to Congress. We can just really extend that. But then when there is approval by the House and the Senate it goes to the President for signature,” Rep. Rodriguez said during a recent interview on ANC’s Headstart.

He added that “in the interest of equity and in the interest of not disrupting the ABS-CBN broadcast operation, TV operation and entertainment while Congress is still not been able to act on it.”

Based on the report, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra told senators that the Congress could come up with a concurrent resolution. This will ensure the network that it will remain in operation pending approval of its franchise application.

According to Rep. Rodriguez, the joint resolution should already extend the franchise of ABSCBN. He also pointed out as lawmakers, they have the right to grant the franchise. With this, he said that the “joint resolution would say you’re extended until we decide on the franchise extension.

Eleven bills were filed in the House of Representatives seeking the franchise renewal of the Kapamilya network. Based on the report, Senator Franklin Drilon filed a proposed resolution extending the franchise of ABSCBN until the end of 2022. This is in the meantime that the Congress is acting on the network’s application to renew its franchise, based on the report.
