Doctors Let Woman Play Violin While They’re Removing Her Brain Tumor

DOCTORS – The doctors at King’s College Hospital in London insisted the woman play her violin while they are removing her brain tumor.

A brain tumor is a collection of abnormal cells or mass in your brain. Any growth inside our brain can cause a big problem because it can be malignant.

Recently, a violinist named Dagmar Turner played her instrument while the surgeons are removing her brain tumor. Based on a report from CNN, she was not showing off her talent during the operation.

The surgeons asked the patient to play the violin to make sure her musical abilities won’t be during the removal of her brain tumor. Dagmar Turner’s tumor is located in her right frontal lobe.

The location was very close to the area of her brain that’s responsible for the movements of her left hand. In a news release, she said the “violin is my passion. I’ve been playing since I was 10 years old… the thought of losing my ability to play was heart-breaking.”

According to the report, a neurosurgeon named Dr. Keyoumars Ashkan was the one who came up with the solution. “We perform around 400 resections (tumor removals) each year, which often involves rousing patients to carry out language tests, but this was the first time I’ve had a patient play an instrument,” he said.

Before the operation started, the doctors spent 2 hours mapping the violinist’s brain to learn the active areas when she played the instrument.

Based on the report, the surgeons successfully removed 90% of the violinist’s tumor without damaging her motor skills. She went home three days after the operation.
