Levels Of Language – The Two Levels And Meaning

LEVELS OF LANGUAGE – In this topic, we are going to know about the two levels of language and their meanings.

Levels of Language

As the saying goes: “there is a time for everything”. Likewise, we are going to apply this to our topic as there are occasions where you need to apply the appropriate form of language, may it be formal or casual.

What are the two levels?

The two levels are:

  • Standard
    • This is basically a level where the language explicitly follows grammatical rules.
  • Nonstandard
    • This level is the other way around as this does not follow grammatical rules.

The standard form of language is then divided into two forms as well: formal and informal.

  • Formal
    • This form is usually found in serious writing. Here, some sentences may be long, complex, more difficult, and seldom-used contractions. This is less of a conversation compared to the other.
  • Informal
    • Informal language, on the other hand, is often used in every day situations. Here, the words and sentences are simple and contractions are often used. In this form you can also see the following:
      • Idioms
        • these are expressions that have a different meaning from its literal meaning.
      • Slang
        • This, on the other hand, consists of expressions coined by m,embers of a group.
