THE KING AND THE SHIRT – In this topic, we are going to read the full text of a tale written by Leo Tolstoy named “The King and The Shirt.
As mentioned above, the tale was written by one of the greatest authors of all time named Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, a Russian writer who is known and reffered to as Leo Tolstoy.
Here is the full text of the tale:
A king once fell ill and said that he will give half his kingdom to the man who can cure his ilness.
All his wise men gathered to know how the king will be cured but no one knew until one of the wise men said what he thought would cure the king:
“If you can find a happy man, take his shirt and put it on the king and he will be cured”
The king sent his subjects to look for the happy man. They traveled far and wide throughout the kingdom but couldn’t find the happy man. Not one of them was completely satisfied. If a man was rich, he was ailing; If he was healthy, he was poor; and if he was both of these things, he had a cross wife; If he had children, they were bad. In other words, they all have their complaints.
One late night, the king’s son was passing by a poor little hut and heard someone say:
“Now, God be praised, I have finished my work, I have eaten my fill, and I can lie down and sleep! What more could I want?”
The prince rejoiced and gave orders that the man’s shirt be taken and carried to the king and reward the man.
The king’s subjects went to take of the man’s shirt. There is one problem, though: The happy man was so poor he had no shirt.
