Comelec Affirms Cardema Ineligible to Sit in 18th Congress
COMELEC – The Commission on Election (COMELEC) has affirmed that Ronald Cardema is ineligible to represent the Duterte Youth party list in the 18th Congress.
The youth organization ‘Duterte Youth’ supports President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s administration. The organization secured a single seat during the 2019 elections. The said party list is led by Ronald Cardema.
In September last year, Cardema withdrew his own nomination as Duterte Youth chair. He decided to end his own congressional bid citing Commission on Elections (Comelec) Commissioner Rowena Guanzon’s alleged “public harassment.”
Based on a report from Inquirer, Cardema’s bit to sit as youth rep in the House of Representatives has ended. On Wednesday, February 12, Comelec en banc accepted his motion to withdraw his motion for reconsideration.
“All told, we give our stamp of approval to the findings of the Commission (First Division) that respondent is not eligible for nomination as the youth representative of Duterte Youth in the House of Representatives,” said Comelec.
According to the report, the poll body earlier declared Cardema as ineligible to lead the Duterte Youth party-list in the 18th Congress for being overaged. Comelec said the withdrawal of his motion for reconsideration “solidified the ruling in the Assailed Resolution that unmistakenly declared respondent as not eligible for the representation of Duterte Youth in the House of Representatives.”
“Respondent, by his own voluntary act of withdrawing as the nominee of Duterte Youth, has finally accepted the decision of this Commission (First Division) that he is not eligible as a nominee of Duterte Youth, which decision is now final and executory,” it added.
Based on the report, under the law, the chairman of a youth sector party list must between 25 to 30 years old. Ronald Cardema is 34-years-old.
