According to Panay News, PRO-6 issued the warning following the capture of a woman at the public market of Guimbal town in Iloilo after paying the store with a counterfeit ₱500 bill, says Police Lieutenant Colonel Joem Malong, PRO-6 information officer.

“We reminde storeowners to scrutinize thoroughly the money being paid them. Some people use fake money,”

Two months ago, the Iloilo branch of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) warned the public to become familiar with the various security features of the Philippine currency in order to avoid being victimized by people spreading fake bills.

The woman, identified as Mailen Omar, 24 years of age from Cotobato province, was arrested at about 9:15 AM on Monday after using fake bills in order to purchase items from the store owned by a Rosita Garillo at the Guimbal public market.

Garillo reported to the police that Omar was the second person to pay with a fake ₱500 bill that day.

Guimbal police chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Nelson Caro confirmed the fake bill when it was compared to another fake ₱500 bill.

“To us, this means there could likely be a group spreading fake money. Ga-operate sila sa mga banwa para indi mabal-an nga fake ila kwarta,”

As per the report, Malong added that the PRO-6 has not observed an organized syndicate in Western Visayas.

“Based in our intelligence monitoring, may ara gid man naga-operate pero indi gid daku nga sindikato, mga magagmay lang nga mga grupo,”

Omar will be probed and is currently detained at the Guimbal police station, facing charges for violation of Article 168 of the Revised Penal Code or illegal possession and use of false treasury bank notes; and estafa.
