UPV – The Miagao campus of the University of the Philippines Visayas (UPV) will soon open the first ever genomic lab in Visayas.
According to Panay News, this is one of the three genomic labs to be constructed in the country, with the other two in Davao and UP Diliman. Furthermore, this will also be the Visayas’ central laboratory.
Rowen Gelonga, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology said that the center will be ready sometime in April, adding that he expects an opening ceremony in the venue.
Genomic laboratories are instrumental in researching new technologies, which could be utilized for a wide variety of applications, which includes pharmaceutical industry, medicine, agribusiness and various others.
As of the moment, stakeholders of the Visayas Genomic Lab are still gathering equipment.
“So ongoing na ang acquisition sang equipment,” Gelonga said. “It’s a collaboration. Some of it will be provided by UP Visayas, while others will be provided by us (DOST). Ang UP Visayas ang ma-provide sang building; ang research center didto ang ma-locate ang genome center.”
Based on the report, once the lab is ready, it will also serve not only as a research building but as a medical research center as well.
“It can also serve the needs of some of our hospitals kag indi lang Western Visayas ang i-serve. The whole Visayas region. We hope to set up a network of research institutions that will hopefully be supported by the genome center,”
