Baguio City Initiates “Carless Tuesday” To Reduce Air Pollution

BAGUIO CITY – The government of Baguio City ordered a “Carless Tuesday” as an attempt to lessen air pollution.

According to SunStar, the mayor of the Summer Capital Benjamin Magalong said that the issue where there is a declining air in the city needs to be handled head-on.

“It is something very alarming. True enough, we have one of the worst air quality to the entire country next to Manila and Cebu,”

A study from the World Health Organization study has pinpointed that Baguio is one of the top cities with the most polluted air and morbidity rate which increased at about 87 percent due to diseases related to the pollution.

Deaths due to air-pollution have been recorded in the city since 2015.

In elaboration, statistics show that there is an average of 2,136 fatalities due to pollution-related sicknesses. Furthermore, 2,181 deaths were recorded in 2015; 2,129 in 2016; 2,267 in 2017; 2,338 in 2018; and lastly there were 1,767 fatalities recorded in 2019.

“I am challenging the transport sector. Let us work it out to modernize the PUJ and PUV sector,”

Magalong added that with Carless Tuesdays, people, including him, will be taking public transport weekly.

As per the report, Baguio now has 603,243 vehicles in the city, with 22,870 of them are motorcycles. The number of cars increased in 2017 with 7,556. This, however, was ballooned to 15,510 in 2019, as per the data.

Datas show that there are also 23,076 public utility vehicles, but this decreased in 2019 with 18,662.

Sports vehicles were recorded at about 6,136 in 2017, and increased in 2019 with 6,582. Trucks, on the other hand, were recorded at about 1,623 in 2017 and increased to 1,076. Lastly, there are now 98 buses and 76 trailers in 2019.
