8 Injured After Hanging Bridge Collapse During Kabankalan Sinulog Fest

KABANKALAN SINULOG – Some of the spectators during the Kabankalan Sinulog Fest fell about 20 meters into a river after a hanging bridge collapsed.

The ‘Sinulog de Kabankalan Festival’ is Kabankalan City’s version of “Ati-Atihan” festival. It is celebrated every third week of January. It is one of the biggest festivals in Negros.

Lots of people coming from different parts of the country join the festivity. Dancers wear colorful costumes while the bodies of partygoers were painted in black soot.

This year’s fluvial parade was marred by tragedy when a portion of the hanging bridge in Barangay Camugao, Kabankalan City snapped. Based on a report from Sunstar, some of the spectators obtained some injuries.

Eight (8) people were rushed to the nearby hospital on early Sunday morning, January 19. The head of Kabankalan City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council, Elbert Javellana, said four (4) adults and four (4) minors fell about 20-meters high into the Camugao River.

According to the report, the eight victims were immediately rescued by Kabankalan City’s Philippine Coast Guard and Rescue Unit. Elbert Javellana said the bridge is already 30-years-old.

Kabankalan Mayor Pedro Zayco said the city government will shoulder all the hospital bills of the victims. They are now treated at the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital. He has also ordered the closure of the hanging bridge.
