Aside from Overpricing, Fake N95 Masks Being Sold in Manila Medical Supply Store
Aside from the overpricing issue, The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) found fake N95 face masks being sold at a store in Manila.
Recently, lots of medical supply stores are hoarding boxes of N95 masks and allegedly being sold at a much higher price to residents. Local government are conducting investigations to these uncharitable stores and sellers.
Meanwhile, during a surprise inspection on Tuesday, The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) found fake N95 face masks being sold at a store in Sta. Cruz, Manila. On reports, the items were being sold at a much higher price after the phreatic eruption of the Taal Volcano.
DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo, who heads the department’s consumer protection group, said the masks being sold at a store along Rizal Avenue were fake and overpriced at P100, even as the similar type of face mask was being sold for only around P50 in nearby stores, Inquirer reported.
The shop owner explained that he had just bought it from his supplier so he didn’t know they were fake. It also added that bought it higher than the regular price.
According to DTI Undersecretary Ruth Castelo, they issued notices of violations at seven stores in just one hour’s roaming in every store. Castelo said cases of Illegal Acts of Price Manipulation and profiteering will be filed against owners of the stores that have recorded violations.
The DTI has already requested the Department of Health to issue a suggested retail price of face masks to prevent overpricing and taking advantage of residents suffering from ashfall caused by Taal Volcano’s eruption.
