DOH Warns Firecracker Victims Against Tetanus Infection
DOH – The Department of Health (DOH) recently warned those who received injuries from firecracker blasts to seek medical attention.
The department added that this is for proper management and the prevention of deadly complications like tetanus infection.
According to PhilStar, the department’s website said that tetanus infection occurs when the spores of Clostridium tetanus pathogens via breaches in the skin such is the case of those caused by firecrackers.
The incubation period ranges between 3 to 21 days. At that time the tetanus can set in after injuries are acquired. The department suggests that victims should get anti-tetanus shots.
The health department also reported that a girl from Manila was hospitalized after she absorbed luces or sparkles on New Year’s Eve.
The girl put the pyrotechnic into her mouth. She was eventually brought to the University of the Philippines hospital for treatment.
As per the report, the girl is one of the 52 new cases of fireworks-related injuries that is being observed by the department, who said that there is now a total of 339 cases as of December 21.
“This year’s cases is 15 cases (5 percent) increase when compared to same time period in 2018 (325) and 50 percent lower than the five-year average (2014-2018) of 685 cases in the same time period,”
Kwitis or small rocket is currently the leading cause of injuries with 76 cases. This was followed by luces with 38, fountain with 35, piccolo with 19. and 5-star. Kwitis, luces and fountain are among the registered fireworks, while piccolo and 5-star are banned.
Limbs of 14 victims were amputated, while 84 more gained eye injuries.
