Can Bretman Rock Be Charged For Dancing To The Philippine National Anthem?
BRETMAN ROCK – One of the biggest social media influencers, Bretman Rock has faced criticism for uploading an Instagram story of him dancing to the Philippine National Anthem.
This caused a stir in social media with people bashing the Bretman. Meanwhile, other fans came to his defense and cited that he immediately deleted the video.
However, can Bretman be charged for his actions? According to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), the Filipino-American vlogger could.
Based on a statement published by the NHCP, Bretman had violated Republic Act No. 8491 or the “Flag Law”. The notice was dated on Jan. 2, 2020 and was signed by Carminda Arevalo, officer-in-charge of NHCP’s Office of the Executive Director.
Although the agency did not specifically mention the vlogger, his Instagram story that showed him lip-synching and twerking to “Lupang Hinirang” was re-uploaded by several netizens.
In the statement of NHCP, it clearly emphasized that “Dancing to the National Anthem as shown in the video above mentioned, therefore constitutes a violation of the Flag law“.
Moreover, the said law provides that ‘failure or refusal to observe the provisions of this Act; and any violation of the corresponding rules and regulations issued by the Office of the President shall, after proper notice and hearing, be penalized by public censure (Section 48)
According to the agency, those who violated the Flag law may face fines ranging from P2,000 to P5,000. In addition, the violators may also be jailed for more than a year.
But, Bretman’s IG story was uploaded more than 3 months ago. Within minutes after he posted it, he immediately deleted the video and apologized.
