TV5 CEO Manny Pangilinan Open to Give a Hand to ABS-CBN if Franchise not Renewed
TV5 CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan is open to supporting media giant and rival ABS-CBN Corp. through the potential loss of its broadcast franchise next year.
ABS-CBN’s broadcast giant franchise will expire is just months away. And with the upcoming expiration of the franchise, President Rodrigo Duterte said that he will block its renewal and better sell the network to other entrepreneurs.
And in the midst of the franchise renewal issue, a television network is ready to lend a hand to ABS-CBN if ever they can no longer operate. TV5 and PLDT Group of Companies CEO Manny V. Pangilinan announced that they are ready for a blocktime deal on Kapamilya shows on the Kapatid network.
According to Pangilinan in a statement, TV5 and their sister network 5 Plus are open to air Kapamilya shows. They are ready to deal with the bosses of ABS-CBN and are ready to put down the network war.
“We have lots of highways on 5. Setting aside the politics, if they want to blocktime, we are prepared to talk. We don’t have much entertainment content. It’s up to them,” Pangilinan said. Currently, almost all sports are broadcast on TV5 and they have a partnership deal with sports network ESPN.
However, even though they are open for negotiations on the Kapamilya network, President Duterte can be as vocal as they are to help ABS-CBN so they are skeptical of the blocktime deal just in case.
“Of course politically, the President might say something so we are reluctant,” Pangilinan clarified.
Pangilinan also clarified that buying ABS-CBN was a good deal as Duterte said it was just for sale, he did not want to take the lead and did not want to consider that the Kapamilya network franchise will not be ever renewed.
“I don’t want to be presumptuous; we don’t want to think about it. It’s up to them. But we’re not offering them anything. We’re not suggesting anything to them so there are really no talks,” Pangilinan said.
