With the rapid growth of technology, we can be quick to dismiss why we celebrate certain things regarding the Filipino heritage. One of these is our own language.

So, here are some of the reasons why we celebrate the National Language.

In 1997, President Fidel Ramos declared the month of August as the national language month or Buwan ng Wika. Because of this, it’s listed as one of the Philippines’ cultural events.

Along with this, the Department of Education and the National Commission for Culture and Arts collaborate to ensure the younger generation participates in the events.

There are many reasons as to why we celebrate National Language Month. One of the reasons is that this month served as a reminder that Filipinos are unique.

There is no other country like the Philippines. According to an article from CBN Asia, celebrating a country’s language also means celebrating its identity.

We could not understand a culture without having direct access to its language… A particular language points to the culture of a particular social group

Another reason for celebrating the National Language month is celebrating the Filipino heritage. English may be the universal language, but, in the Philippines, there are several languages to choose from.

Each of these languages are specific to certain islands. So, not only do we need to celebrate Filipino as a language, we should celebrate the local dialect as well.
