Definition

According to ThoughtCo, a composition is the way a writer arranges his words and sentences to produce a coherent and meaningful work.

This is also defined as the activity of writing, the nature of the subject of a piece of writing, the piece of writing itself, and the name of a college course assigned to a student. Composition also fixates on practicing how they write.

Types

There are 4 types of composition:

  • Description
    • Also known as descriptive writing, it is a statement or account that describes something or someone, lists characteristic features and details in order to provide the reader with a portrayal in words/
  • Narration
    • Also known as narrative writing, it is a personal account or a story that the writer tells his readers. The story could contain a series of facts or events of a certain situation, a person, or even himself or herself.
  • Exposition
    • Also known as expository, is the act of elaboration of a person, place, object, or event. Its purpose is to describe something and to give it a reality, an interpretation, and the writer’s ideas of what it means.
  • Argumentation
    • Also known as argumentative writing, it is an exercise in comparing and contrasting. Argumentation is the methodological presentation of both sides of an argument using logical or formal reasoning.
