This is under the proposed Salary Standardization Law (SSL) scheduled for final approval by the House of Representatives. With this, several teacher’s groups had denounced the increase of just P52 per day.

According to an article from Inquirer, the teachers said that it “signaled the death” of the much needed compensation they yearned for many years.

The Senate had submitted its version of the revamped SSL bill on the thrid and final reading on Monday. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives approved its version on the second reading as well.

As per the article, they are likely to finalize their votes before Thursday. Under the bill, entry-level teachers are getting a P6,246 increase in monthly salaries.

However, this is spread over four years and would eventually lead to an annual salary of P27,000 come 2023. Currently, the salary is about P20,754.

The salary increase is much lower than Duterte’s previously pledged P10,000. In addition to this, inflation and the loss of tax-exempt status would quickly burn through the additional pay according to ACT and the Teacher’s Dignity Coalition (TDC).

Because of this development, Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) chair Joselyn Martinez had this to say to the President during a conference in Quezon City.

We are appealing to President Duterte as the one who will sign this into law

You promised you would double our salaries. This is in your hands, and we will hold you accountable for this.
