Jefferey Perez, the supervising science research specialist at Phivolcs said only a portion of the fault had moved. Following this, he said that they still need to know which part did.

The Tangbulan fault had the capacity to generate a destructive 7.2 magnitude earthquake. However, on Sunday, the fault produced a lower magnitude of 6.9.

According to an article from Inquirer, the first series of earthquakes were caused by the Mlang fault and the Makilala fault moving. The Tangbulan fault was also described as running parallel to the east of the Makilala-Malungon fault.

The Mlang Fault generated a 6.3 magnitude earthquake on October 16. This was then discovered to be the foreshock of the 6.6-magnitude quake on Oct. 29. Following this, on Oct. 31, The Makilala Fault produced a 6.5 magnitude quake.

The Makilala-Malungon Fault runs 65 km from Makilala, Cotabato, and Sarangani. Meanwhile, the Tangbulan fault goes through Bansalan, Davao del Sur, Santa Maria, and Davao Occidental Province.

With this, Science Undersecretary Renato Solidum stated that a much stronger quake could still happen in Tangbulan. However, he emphasized that the chance of this happening would be low due to the intensity of the previous one.

He explained that the faults are stressed. Once this happens, they are bound to move at some point. Afterward, he said that once energy has been released, a period of rest follows.
