This literary device refers to polite, indirect expressions that replace words or phrases that are harsh or unpleasant. They are also an idiomatic expression that refers to something else other than their original meaning.

One of the most notable examples of this is the phrase “kicked the bucked”. This was a euphemism that somebody had died.

According to an article from Literary Devices, the meaning of euphemisms depend largely on the social context of the speaker or writers. Sometimes, there are certain groups that the writer needs to adjust to.

Here are some examples of Euphemisms in our everyday lives:

  • You are becoming a little thin on top (Bald)
  • That man is a little bit tipsy already (almost drunk)
  • He is a special child (mentally challenged or disabled)
  • Beating the bush (avoiding the main topic)
  • Hitting the hay (going to bed)

In literature, this literary device is also present as found in William Shakespeare’s Othello.

“I am one, sir, that comes to tell you your daughter and the Moor are now making the beast with two backs.”.

In the example above, the expression “making the beast with two backs” refers to having intercourse.

Euphemisms help writers convey ideas that have become a social taboo of sorts that are too embarrassing to mention directly. Writers use this strategically to talk about a subject that may be censored.

In addition, it is an excellent tool for writers to allow creativity in dealing with sensitive issues. Topics like religious fanaticism, political theories, sexuality, and death are often filled with euphemisms.
