What Is Myanmar? About This Country In Southeastern Asia

Known officially as the Republic of the Union of Myanmar or simply Burma, it is a country in the southeastern region of Asia.

Its official language is Nepali and is known locally as Pyidaunzu Thanmăda Myăma Nainngandaw ( ပြည်ထောင်စု သမ္မတ မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတော်‌ ).

It has a landmass of about 676K kilometers squared or 261K square miles, and a population of about 53 million people, as of 2017, making it the 48th most populous country. Its capital city is Naypyidaw or Nay Pyi Taw.

Etymology

Both of its names are derived from the early Burmese term Myanma or Myamma, which refers to the major Bamar ethnic group. It is also said to be derived from the name Brahma Desha which is named after the Hindu creator god Brahma.
