Filipino Surfer Roger Casugay Lauded For Saving Rival During SEA Games 2019

SEA GAMES 2019 – Pinoy surfer Roger Casugay was praised for saving his competitor from drowning during SEA Games 2019.

Accidents are inevitable in any kind of competition. One of the most dangerous sport is aquatic events. Even if there are lots of rescuers in the area, athletes should be careful with the waves because it is treacherous and unpredictable.

On Friday, December 6, an Indonesian surfer drowned during a SEA Games 2019 competition in La Union. Fortunately, his Filipino opponent was nearby and immediately came to rescue him.

The Pinoy athlete named Roger Casugay gave away his sure-shot to bag the gold medal to help his rival Arip Nurhidayat. Two days after his heroic act, he defeated the Indonesian surfer in the semifinal and won the gold medal in the longboard open competition against fellow Pinoy Rogelio Esquivel.

Aside from winning the gold medal, he was hailed as a hero in the entire Southeast Asia for saving his rival. He gained a lot of praise from millions of people.

Based on a report from PEP, Roger Casugay said he forgot about the match after she was his opponent struggling with the huge waves. “As a surfer, mayroon kaming brotherhood, parang no matter what happen, kung yung isa nangangailangan ng tulong, puntahan mo,” he said.

“Kung ano yung mayroon ka, ibigay mo kung kaya mong ibigay. Wala na sa isip ko na manalo pa kasi safe na kaming dalawa sa nangyaring yun… Masayang-masaya kaming dalawa noong nakarating kami sa shore at saka nagtatawanan na lang kami, nagyakapan kami,” he added.

Roger Casugay previously went viral after he and his Dutch girlfriend Lisa Verweij was featured on the Jessica Sojo’s show KMJS. The couple shared their unique love story on the program.

According to the report, the Kapuso host said the Filipino surfer deserved to be featured on their show again after his heroic act on the SEA Games 2019 event.

“Mukhang dapat talaga siyang ma-feature. Kahanga-hanga siya,” Jessica said.
