Bicol Schools Suffers P904 Million Worth Of Damages Due To Typhoon Tisoy
TYPHOON TISOY – The onslaught of Typhoon Tisoy left Bicol with at least P904 million worth of damages.
The typhoon was reported as the strongest one that hit the Philippines this year. It left hundreds of establishments in ruin in the Bicol area.
According to a report from DepEd’s Rapid Assessment of Damages Report (RADAR), it left 240 classrooms destroyed. Meanwhile, there were 543 classrooms damaged.
Based on an article from Inquirer, DepEd Bicol spokesperson Mayflor Jumamil stated that the estimated cost of the destroyed classrooms was P600 million. In addition, the damaged classrooms cost about P272 million.
“There is also a need to build 289 temporary learning spaces to be utilized by the learners in severely affected schools“, said Jumamil.
Aside from the infrastructure, furniture, learning materials, and computer equipment were also damaged. As per the article, DepEd said they would need P24.7 million to build temporary classrooms.
In addition, according to the Office of Civil Defence (OCD), Regional Director Claudio Yucot said the biggest loss came from the coconut industry. The damage incurred was about P489,644,400.
In addition, there was a total of 1,200 hectares of rice that were destroyed. This was worth an estimated P72 million in losses.
Also, there were some 1,200 hectares of fruit trees worth P36 million that were affected. Adding to this, 800 hectares of banana worth P16 million was also destroyed by the typhoon.
Because of the onslaught of the Typhoon, the city government of Naga and provincial government of Sorsogon both declared a state of calamity.
