Man Spreading Fake News About Abduction Attempt Involving White Van Got Arrested
DANAO, CEBU – a man who was posting and spreading fake news about the allegedly abduction attempt involving a white got arrested in Danao City, Cebu.
According to the report of SunStar Superbalita, a 21-year old man, who posted on Facebook that he was almost abducted by kidnappers using a white van, was taken by policemen for spreading fake news that caused panic among Cebu residents and netizens.
Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon, director of the Central Visayas regional police, identified him as Brigs Granada Alvaro, of Sitio Taboc, Barangay Lo-oc in Danao City. De Leon said he immediately ordered his men to be on high alert and monitor social media posts about the white van allegedly abducting minors since it was already creating panic in Metro Manila
Police of Danao recently monitored the post of this young man who was spreading the fake news narrate how he was almost abducted by unidentified persons on a white van in Danao City. The post of Alvaro was written in Cebuano.
Danao City police chief Lt. Col. Maribel Getigan said in an interviw that they immediately checked on Alvaro’s post on Dec. 2, 2019, Monday and found out that it was a purely made-up story.
Getigan said she immediately sent investigators to the area, along with representatives from the local government. During the confrontation, Alvaro allegedly admitted that he just made up the entire story of white van kidnapping.
The Facebook post was made amid reports of abductions of teenagers by still unidentified groups of men using vans in Metro Manila. Some posts also claimed that abducted victims were allegedly being harvested of their important organs to be sold.
They have cautioned netizens against sharing unverified alleged incidents that could create panic and trauma. Instead, he called on the public to immediately report to the police and not on social media.
Alvaro will face the case of violation of the Revised Penal Code, particularly Alarm and Scandal in relation to (Cyber Crime Law), Section 6, Republic Act 10175 for spread fake news on social media.
