MINDORO ISLAND – In this topic, we will now know about the Luzon island in the Philippines called the Mindoro Island.
Also known as the Island of Mindoro, it is the seventh largest island in the Philippines, with a landmass of about 10.5K kilometer squared or 4K square miles.
It is at the southwest coast of Luzon and northeast of the island of Palawan.
The island is divided into two provinces:
- Occidental Mindoro (Capital: Mamburao)
- Also known as Natundan na Mindoro or Laud nga Mindoro, it is the western half of Mindoro .
- Oriental Mindoro (Capital: Calapan)
- Also known as Amianan nga Mindoro or Sidlanganong Mindoro, it is the eastern half of Mindoro.
This was formerly called Ma-i or Mait by the Chinese traders. The indigenous group that live in the island are called Mangyans.
When the Spanish colonized the archipelago, they called the island “Mina de Oro” which is Spanish for gold mine, hence, the name.
