So what are the odds that the Earth would be facing such a cataclysmic event? Based on the statistics of NASA, there is a one in 3,800 chance that this would happen.

Despite only a 0.026% chance of the asteroid smashing into the Earth, it could lead to apocalyptic results. NASA said that it would even be worse than the movies.

Based on an article from Inquirer, the City Killer Asteroid was labeled JF1. In the event that it would hit the planet, the force would be equivalent to 230 kilotons of TNT.

This, in turn, would be 15 times stronger than the atomic bomb that hit Hiroshima back in 1945. The bomb annihilated the entire city with 15 kilotons of force.

Scientists said that even if the asteroid hit the “remotest part of the Pacific Ocean”, the impact would still be so strong and powerful. The effect of this would be massive tsunamis and a “nuclear winter”.

The researchers at NASA estimate that the massive asteroid is around 420 feet across and 130 meters in diameter. Because of its size and potential danger, NASA had been monitoring this asteroid for a decade now.

With this, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is continuously monitoring the asteroid through Sentry. This system is described as a highly automated collision monitor that keeps on scanning the most current asteroid catalog for the next 100 years.
