Younghusband has an impressive career spanning over 13 years. Throughout his run, he became the country’s top goalscorer with 52 goals.

Along with this, he also has the most appearances in the Philippine Azkals with 108 matches. Also, he led the national team after Rob Gier’s retirement three years ago.

Younghusband first came into the PH football scene back in 2005 South East Asian Games in Bacolod. There, he scored twice in a 2-4 loss against Malaysia.

Afterward, he went back to Bacolod after a year to compete in his first senior international tournament. He led the Azkals with six goals in three matches during the Asean Football Federation Championship qualifiers.

One of Younghusband’s most iconic moments was his goal during the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup in Hanoi, Vietnam. That time, they had the biggest upset in tournament history.

Though having food poisoning the night before, he scored a goal that secured a 2-0 win against defending champions, Vietnam. That match was then dubbed as the “Miracle in Hanoi”.

According to an article from Inquirer, Younghusband said that he wanted to be known as a good person first before a football player. Adding to this, he wanted people to say he contributed to football in the country.

In lieu of this, he and his brother, James, said that they would still continue to become mentors and ambassadors of the sport. “I still want to raise the interest again. I still think if we can do it in before 2010, it should be easier now“, said Phil.

I still want to be part of Philippine football in some way. It has given me a lot and I want to give that back to the sport.
