The case involved a 41-year old man from Madrid who got the virus after having intercourse with his male partner. Reports say his partner got the virus from a mosquito bite on a trip to Cuba.

Susana Jimenez of the Madrid region’s public health department confirmed his dengue infection in September. She added that they were confused as to how the individual had gotten the disease.

They looked into the record of the man and found out that he hasn’t gone into a country where the disease can be found. However, his partner showed the same symptoms but lighter 10 days prior.

Jimenez then found out that the partner had previously traveled to Cuba and the Dominican Republic. The health authorities then conducted an analysis of their sperm.

Based on an article from ABS-CBN, The test revealed that the sperm carried the dengue virus. Not only that, it was also the same strain that circulated in Cuba.

Jimenez also recalled that there was a “likely” case of dengue transmission through intercourse that was a subject for a scientific study in South Korea.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) heard about the case and said that this was the first transmission of disease through intercourse.

The ECDC is the organization that monitors the health and disease in all of Europe. They analyze and interpret data from countries in the EU.

Dengue is most prominent in hotter, tropical climates like Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and Central America.

In the Philippines, Dengue is one of the most problematic and deadly diseases. It caused countless deaths and is the most deadly in children.
