Ion

According to AplusTopper, it is a positively or negatively charged atom or a group of atoms. It is made by the gain or loss of the atom’s electrons, hence it contains an unequal number of electrons and protons.

Types

There are two types:

  • Cation
    • A cation is a positively charged ion that is formed by losing one or more electrons by an atom.
  • Anion
    • An anion is a negatively charged ion which is formed by gaining one or more electrons by an atom
    • It also contains more electrons than normal ones since normal atoms contains an equal number of protons and electrons.

There are also things to know about ions such as:

  • Simple Ions
    • These are formed from single atoms
  • Compound Ions
    • These are formed from groups of joined atoms
  • Ionic Compounds
    • These are made up of ions. Here, the cations and anions are held together via the strong electrostatic forces of attraction.
