Meaning

A tree is a tall plant that can live for many years. Elaborately, it is a perennial plant which is composed of an elongated stem or trunk, branches and leaves.

Due to the fact that they are long lived, they can live up to thousands of years old. The oldest known discovered tree is about 5,000 years old.

Parts

According to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations of British Columbia, there are three main parts: leaves, trunk, and roots. The upper part with the branches is called a crown.

• Leaves
  • Also known as needles, these make sugar from air and water and undergoes a process called photosynthesis, where they use sunlight energy in order to produce glucose from carbon dioxide and water.
    • Stomates
      • These are the holes in the leaves that control the amount of air that enters and goes out the tree
    • Chlorophyll
      • A chemical that makes the leaves green
• Trunk
  • The main stem or the body of a tree which is composed of the following layers:
    • Outer Bark
      • Protects it from fire or insects
    • Phloem
      • The layer of cells that makes a pipeline in order to carry sugars from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
    • Cambium
      • The growing part of the trunk. This produces new phloem and sapwood each year
    • Sapwood
      • A pipeline that carries water and nutrients from the roots up to the leaves.
    • Heartwood
      • A dead wood in the center of the tree the gives the plant its strength.
• Roots
  • It supports the anchor the tree to the earth and to absorb water and nutrients from the soil.
