You might have heard of this term whenever a new device like a phone or a tablet is featured. But what exactly is it meaning?

According to Technopedia, also shortly known as OS, it is a software which enables the user to run other applications on a computing device. In other words, it is a software that runs other software.

It is also a software that is able to interface directly with the hardware, which includes:

  • Input devices such as a keyboard and mouse.
  • Output devices such as display monitors, printers and scanners.
  • Network devices such as modems, routers and network connections.
  • Storage devices such as internal and external drives.

It also provides services to manage the efficient action and additional installed software application programs.

Parts

The three defining parts of the OS include:

  • Kernel
    • Provides basic-level control over all computer hardware devices. Its roles includes
      • reading data from memory and writing data to memory, processing execution orders
      • determining how data is received and sent by devices such as the monitor, keyboard and mouse
      • and determining how to interpret data received from networks.
  • UI or User Interface
    • It is basically what is in front of you. This allows user interaction, which occurs via graphical icons and a desktop or via a command line
  • API or Application Programming Interfaces
    • Allows application developers to write modular code.
