According to Technopedia, also shortly known as OS, it is a software which enables the user to run other applications on a computing device. In other words, it is a software that runs other software.
It is also a software that is able to interface directly with the hardware, which includes:
- Input devices such as a keyboard and mouse.
- Output devices such as display monitors, printers and scanners.
- Network devices such as modems, routers and network connections.
- Storage devices such as internal and external drives.
It also provides services to manage the efficient action and additional installed software application programs.

The three defining parts of the OS include:
