MORO CULTURE – In this article, we will learn and discover about the material culture of the Moro people.
All Muslim groups that inhabit the Philippines are called Moro. They are usually found in the uplands of Tagabili, Subanon, Bukidnon, Bagobo, Manday, and Manobo.
They carry along with them their very own traditions and cultures. The Moro culture is greatly influenced by Islam.
They faithfully practice five religious duties. These are the declaration of their sacred creed, their prayers, Sakah, Fasting during Ramadan, and making the pilgrimage to Mecca.
Muslims may pray alone or in groups, however, during Friday, the midday prayer is held in a place called the mosque.
There are no paintings allowed inside the mosque. Adding to this, there are no pews or reserved places inside the mosque.
Instead, there are rugs they line up behind the Imam. These are the worship leaders of the Islam faith.
They also believe the Koran to be the absolute word of God. This is then preached by Mohammed to his fellowmen.
The Koran is also the basis of Muslim laws. However, there are times where the Muslims have mixed interpretations of the Koran.
The houses of the Moro are built using similar materials to that of the Christians. The people use well-woven pandan mats and a thick mattress fitted with kapok for steeping.

When it comes to food, the Moro have strict rules. They never eat pork because they believe it to be unclean.
However, they are allowed to eat meat if the animal was killed following their religious practices. They also use a lot of coconut in their cooking.
When it comes to clothing, women are required to wear long sleeves. The neck of their coat-like blouse should also be cut high and closed.
They also wear a sarong as their skirt. It is wrapped around the body and tucked in the waist.
