According to LiveScience, it is a force which attracts two bodies toward each other like magnets. This is the force which pulls us back to the ground after we push ourselves away from it. The bigger the object, the stronger its gravitational pull is.

It is also one of the four fundamental force, which the other three are electromagnetic, strong, and weak. This force is the reason why we have weight as the scale tells you how much this force acts on our body.

Sir Isaac Newton, who is known for the famous and debated “apple hit on Newton’s head”, developed the Theory of Gravitation.

Newton discovered that gravity acts on all matter. He also found out that the force is also a function of mass and distance. The theory also states that every object attracts every other object with a force that is proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them, which can be expressed as:

” Fg = G (m1 ∙ m2) / r2

Where:

  • Fg = gravitational force
  • m1 and m2 = masses of the two objects
  • r = distance between the two
  • G = universal gravitational constant
