From the 1st Century BCE to the 7th century CE, the Korean peninsula was ruled by three kingdoms. These were Baekje, Goguryeo, and Silla.

Silla had the backing of the Chinese. They would then eventually conquer all of the other Korean states.

Afterwards, they formed the Unified Sila Kingdom. This Kingdom ruled until 935 CE.

However, starting in the 10th century CE, the peninsula was being ruled by the Goryeo kingdom. This was until Korea’s independence was put to a halt by the invasion of the Mongols in the 13th century CE.

Goryeo was located in the northern and central parts of the Korean peninsula and the southern parts of Manchuria. At the peak of their reign, the kingdom controlled most of Korea and even parts of Russia.
