TRANSPORT STRIKE – Hordes of commuters are currently affected by the ongoing transport strike on Monday (September 30).

According to Inquirer, the citizens in Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela, and Quezon City, who commutes for transport are affected by the transport strike of groups of PUVs or public utility vehicles.
Several people are seen at the Light Rail Transit (LRT) 5th Avenue and Monumento Station as they wait to catch a ride.
Meanwhile, about 30 members from PiSTON or the Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide and other factions related to the cause are protesting near the Bonifacio monument in the city.
Class suspensions are declared in Metro Manila. Despite this, there are commuters that fin it difficult to find jeepneys, including Commonwealth Avenue, where protests are held by PiSTON and other members of the Alliance of Concerned Transport Organization (ACTO).
The strike, which is initiated by mostly drivers and operators of jeepney and UV Express mobile units, is to oppose against the jeepney modernization plan by the government.
The proposal states that 15 year old or older vehicles are mandated to comply with Euro 4 standards. This is in order to reduce the harmful effects of engine emissions.

As per the report, what the protesters are against is not the modernization entirely, but rather the plan to phase out jeepneys and UV Express. About 240,000 jeepney and 80,000 UV Express vehicles will be affected, according to Group leaders.
