Agriculture Secretary William Dar asked farmers to communicate any form of illness or death of their pigs to vets. This would allow experts to advice proper disposal of the animals.

The veterinarian would then work with the DA’s Bureau of Animal Industry to figure out the cause. This appeal was in line with the cases of African Swine Fever.

Dar also addressed the issue of irresponsible disposal of dead pigs found on the Marikina River. He stated that it was utterly irresponsible of the raiser.

Afterwards, Dar said that current laws were violated. He then added that their actions spread the disease pathogens at a faster rate.

The law that they violated was the Animal Welfare act. The agriculture secretary then added that they maltreated their pigs.

Violators of the Animal Welfare Act may be sentenced from six months to two years. Adding to this, they could be fined P1,000 to P5,000.

Dar also said that the suspected raisers violated the Solid Waste Management Act as well. The raisers were irresponsibly dumping dead pigs in public waterways, he added.

Solid Waste Management Act violator can be fined with P300 to P1000. They could also be sentenced to render one to 15 days of community service.

According to Philstar, the DA has partnered with the BAI and the National Meat Inspection Service. Along with this, private sectors, LGUS, and military have also collaborated with the DA.

According to Dar, they have all taken the necessary measures to contain the spread of the ASF. He then added that the irresponsible dumping of dead pigs should not be tolerated.
