The Philippines is a mixed society. The country is divided into different subgroups of culture.

H. Otley Beyer was the first to propose a theory regarding migration to the Philippines. This theory was called the wave migration theory.

Henry Otley Beyer was the founder of the Anthropology Department of The University of the Philippines. He also headed the department for 40 years.

Based on Beyer’s studies, the ancestors of the Filipinos arrived in different “waves” of migration. These waves are as follows:

  • Dawn Man
  • Negritos
  • Indonesian group
  • Malays

The next next model of migration would be the core population theory. This would be a less rigid version of Beyer’s wave theory.

The core population theory was proposed by Felipe Landa Jocana. These theory stated that there was not a coherent and discrete waves of migration.

Instead it believes that early settlers of Southeast Asia were within one ethnic group. Along with this, a similar culture.

But through out time they would have differentiated themselves from each other. It also stated that environmental factors played a role in this as well.

There are also modern theories of migration. These modern theories comprise of the “Out of Sundaland” and “Out of Taiwan” theories.

The “Out of Sundaland” hypothesized the origins of the Austronesian peoples as being part of the sunken Sundaland landmass. This included Sumatra, Java, Sumatra Peninsula, and Borneo.

The “Out of Taiwan” theory however, is the most accepted hypothesis today, according to wikipedia. This theory was also originally based on linguistic evidence.

Afterwards the theory was more inclined to archaeological, cultural, and genetic findings. In summary the theory proposed that the first Austronesian arrived in the Philippines from Taiwan.

This was at around 2200 BC. It also stated that those people settled in Batanes Islands and northern Luzon.
