VAPING – Health authorities in recent weeks have struggled to comprehend a line-up of vaping-related illnesses that have caused healthy individuals to be hospitalized due to serious lung diseases.

Last Friday, authorities announced another casualty connected to electronic cigarettes. These types of devices are battery-powered and mimic smoking by heating liquids containing traces of nicotine or other substances.

Health departments in Wisconsin and Illinois traced the first instance of the illness among 53 individuals to April. The victims ended up in hospitals with the majority under intensive care.

The symptoms of the illness often include coughing, chest pain and shortness of breath. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other symptoms included:

  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • weight loss
  • fatigue
  • fever

The majority of the victims ended up with acute respiratory distress syndrome. This illness causes fluids to flood the lungs, preventing oxygen from circulating the bloodstream.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is very life threatening. Although it is generally treatable and most patients could recover from it.

The first vaping related death was reported on August 23 in Illinois. According to CDC, authorities had already begun investigating about 200 cases of the illness in 22 states.

Similarly, Oregon officials have also announced a second death earlier this week. They stated that a middle aged man went critically ill after vaping with marijuana oil.

This was the first instance of a casualty connected to a store-bought product. However, authorities have not disclosed the product details for the Illinois casualty.

Furthermore, over 450 counts of potential vaping-related illness had spread among 33 states as of Friday. Most victims of the illness were young with the casualties often being adults.
