DOJ To Investigate Prison Bureau Executives Over Convicts Early Release
DOJ – The Department of Justice (DOJ) initiates a probe on the liability of prison bureau officials over the early release of convicts.
In relation to the early release of convicts of heinous crimes due to GCTA law, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) earlier said that they will deploy tracker teams to rearrest the said convicts.
This, according to Interior Secretary Año, is in case their release orders be revoked. Año further clarified that this is different from hunting down underground personalities as most of them should be back home by now.
Recently, the Department of Justice (DOJ), announced that they started a probe to see if prison bureau executives are held liable over the release of convicts.
A report from ABS-CBN states that 1,914 out of 22,049 inmates are given the early release because of the good conduct time allowance law , according to the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor).
The justice department clarified that while it does not have sufficient direct control over BuCor, they can still review and reconfigure the quasi-judicial and regulatory functions like the implementing of the GCTA, according to Justice undersecretary and spokesperson Markk Perete.
Perete further said that it is vital for them that the BuCor shoul have submit records in order to see what the issue was. He further added that the aspect to see if someone has made a mistake is part of the Justice bureau, stressing that the Secretary already announced that initiation of the probe.
As per the report, the director general of BuCor Nicanor Faeldon told the solon that he signed a memoraandum suggsting the release of fromer mayor Antonio Sanchez, who is arrested for the crimes he made against two UP students Eileen Sarmenta and Allan Gomez. Faeldon, however, halted the process, saying that Sanchez is not entitled.
