How To Divide Decimals? Steps On Decimal Division
DIVIDE DECIMALS – In this lesson, we will now learn and discuss the following steps we need to follow in order to divide decimals.
In Math, we come across the lesson decimals, the basics of decimals, and how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals. For this particular topic, we must know how we can divide these decimals.
But first, we must know the basic stuff in dividing numbers. The standard format in division is this one below:
Notice that I have labeled each part with terms, just to refresh your mind. Now what are the meaning of these terms?
- Dividend – the number that is going to be divided
- Divisor – the number dividing the dividend.
- Answer – the answer to the Math problem.
Now that you know the basic things you need to know about division, it’s time for decimal division. Note: Regardless of whether or not the dividend is a decimal or not, you can divide it the usual way.
Here are the following steps:
1. If the divisor is a whole number
a. Again, as mentioned above, divide the way you used.
b. Since the dividend is a decimal, add the decimal at the same position in the answer as shown below:
2. If the divisor is a decimal
a. Move the decimal point to the right to make it a whole number. For example below, the number of decimals is 1. Thus, for the dividend move the decimal the same number of places, in this case, move the decimal at the right one time.
b. Then divide.
