Barangay Captain Release Bullfrogs Instead Of Cane Toads in Esteros
BARANGAY CAPTAIN – The Barangay Captain in Old Balara mistakenly released bullfrogs in esteros instead of cane toads to halt the spread of dengue mosquitoes.
A few days ago, the barangay captain at Balara, Allan Franza, released at least 1000 bullfrogs in their esteros to halt the spread of dengue-carrying mosquitoes. This was after the Department of Health declared a national dengue alert.
Hundreds of people have died due to the deadly virus. Doctors and patients were asking for the return of the dengue vaccine “dengvaxia.”
Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said he’s open for the return of the vaccine to the market to address the epidemic. All the local officials in barangays have their own way to stop the spread of mosquitoes.
Based on a report from News5, a herpetologist from the University of the Philippines in Los Baños said Barangay Captain Allan Franza released the wrong frog. The report was shared on their official Twitter account.
According to the report, Dr. Leticia Afuang said the Barangay Captain should have released cane toads instead of the bullfrogs. She said those frogs he released in the canals are considered pests and poisonous even to the snakes.
The herpetologist said those bullfrogs should be slain immediately before they reproduce and would eventually harm the community. She also expressed that the bullfrogs won’t help reduce the numbers of mosquitoes in their barangay.
