The Twelve Levels Of Biological Organization
LEVELS OF BIOLOGICAL ORGANIZATION – In this topic, we will now discuss about the twelve levels of biological organization.
A biological organization, by definition, is the order of complex biological structures and systems that define life via a simplified approach.
Higher levels of this hierarchy are usually called an ecological organizational concept or in terms of specialty or field, called hierarchical ecology.
The Twelve Levels
- Atom – it is the smallest unit of matter which is composed of a chemical element. Every solid, liquid, gas, and plasma is made of neutral or ionized atoms.
- Molecule – When atoms form together and held by chemical bonds, they form a molecule, an electrically neutral group. These are distinguished from ions due to their lack of electrical charge.
- Organelle – Organelles is a sub-unit of a cell that has a specific set of functions or uses.
- Cell – The basic unit of all known organisms. Derived from the Latin word cella which means small room. They are the building blocks of life.
- Tissue – A group of the same cells that carries a particular use.
- Organ -Tissues with similar functions group together to become an organ.
- Organ System – An organization of organs with one or more functions that work together.
- Organism – Derived from the Greek word organismos (ὀργανισμός), which is any individual or solo entity that breeds the properties of life.
- Population – refers to the same group of organisms living together in a certain place or area.
- Community – An association of populations of two or more different organisms living in the same place or area. It is also known as biocenosis.
- Ecosystem – A community of living things coexisting with non-living things of their environment, living as a system.
- Biosphere – Derived from two Greek words bios (βίος) meaning life, and sphaira (σφαῖρα ) which means sphere is the worldwide amalgamation of all ecosystems. It is also known as ecosphere or the zone of life on Earth.
