There tons of well-known dances that are native to the Philippines. Back in the days, our forebears have come up with unique dances that are still practiced until today.

Most of these dances aren’t only for entertainment but also represent something important in history or animal movements. Some of the dances symbolize values, courtship, and other elements of the Filipino culture.

ITIK-ITIK

This dance follow steps that almost imitates the way a duck walks. Ducks often splash water on its back to attract a possible mate, that concept is being applied to this dance. It was created by a lady named Kanang back in the days. She made up the dance steps while she was at a baptismal party and other guests imitated followed her, it has been passed on to generations since.

TINIKLING

The Tinikling dance is considered by many Filipinos as the national dance of the Philippines. This dance follow steps that imitate the movements of a bird called the ‘tinikling’. As the bird walks through tall grass, brances and hindrances, it would look as if its skipping through. People adapted the movements and used bamboo poles to represent the hindrances, it is only comprised of three basic steps: singles, doubles and hops.

SAYAW SA BANGKO

A slightly difficult dance that is usually performed on a bench. Dancers of this traditional dance would need to have a good sense of balance as they would have to perform complex movements. The dance also includes steps that almost look like acrobatics. Its history could be traced back to Pangapisan, Lingayen and Pangasinan.

BINASUAN

Binasuan is a dance that is usually performed for social occasions like weddings and birthdays. It is an entertaining dance that features dancers with great balance. Three glasses half-filled with rice wine on the head and each hands are kept upright while the dances spin and roll. This originated in Bayambang, Pangasinan province.
