LAYERS OF EARTH – In this topic, we will now discuss the four layers of Earth, its meaning, what is it made of, how deep, and more.
Remember when you notice that an onion has layers? Well guess what? So does the planet Earth. Like onions, the planet Earth also contains layers. In fact, there are 4 of them: crust, mantle, and the inner and outer core.
Now lets discuss them one by one. Shall we?
Crust
The surface an the first layer the earth. This is basically the layer where we humans live right now. There are two kinds of crust: oceanic and continental. Basically, oceanic crust is made up of basalt and sedimentary rocks and makes up 71% of the Earth’s first layer; while continental crust is made up of igneous rocks and makes up 29% of the first layer. It is constantly moving and is 60km thick continental-wise, and 5km thick oceanic-wise.
Mantle
The second layer of the earth. It is split into two parts: the lithosphere and the asthenosphere. The lithosphere is the top layer of the mantle and is a dense rock made out of iron and nickel. The aesthenosphere, on the other hand, is the bottom part of the mantle and is made of a plastic-like fluid. Inside the mantle, an event called convection currents exist where they spin the mantle’s layers round and round.
Outer Core
The second hottest layer of the earth and is made out of iron and nickel. The outer core puts pressure to the inner core the most
Inner Core
The innermost and hottest layer of the earth. It is also the thinnest layer and is also made up of iron and nickel and is a growing layer.
