Definition

It is a field of science which is an amalgamate of physical, biological and information sciences with sub topics that include ecology, biology, physics, chemistry, plant science, zoology, etc.

To put it simply, it is a science about the environment, and the solution of environmental problems.

Branches

  • Atmospheric Science – a study which focuses more on the Earth’s atmosphere, with an emphasis upon its interrelation to other systems. This study includes meteorology, greenhouse gas phenomena, atmospheric dispersion modeling of airborne contaminants, etc.
  • Ecology – the study of the interactions between organisms and their environment. The study also focuses on the relationship between a population of organisms and some physical characteristic of their environment.
  • Environmental Chemistry – the study of chemical alterations in the environment. The study also includes soil contamination and water pollution, chemical degradation in the environment, multi-phase transport of chemicals, and chemical effects upon biota.
  • Geosciences – A study which includes environmental geology, environmental soil science, volcanic phenomena and evolution of the Earth’s crust, hydrology, oceanography, and more.
