Cebuano Filmmaker’s Debut Film ‘Ma’ To Compete In NY Asian Film Festival
CEBUANO – Debut movie of the Cebuano filmmaker ‘Ma’ is set to compete for the New York Asian Film Festival.
The Filipino movie ‘MA’ is a gruesome story about a young boy’s love for his mother, a rampage, and a mysterious cave that demands peoples live in exchange of wishes.
iWant tv’s original horror movie revolves around Kyle Espiritu’s character Samuel who wishes to bring his mom Glydel Mercado back to life.
Stars of the movie ‘Ma’ include Anna Luna, Alessandra Malonzo, Enzo Osorio, Ian Curtis, Susan Africa, and Rafael Siguion-Reyna among others.
The horror movie is directed by a 25-year-old Cebuano filmmaker named Kenneth Lim Dagatan. He finished Fine Arts Major in Cinema at the University of San Carlos in Cebu City.
Based on a report from Cebu Daily News, the Cebuano’s horror film ‘Ma’ was included to compete for the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) 18th edition.
The New York Asian Film Foundation and Film at Lincoln Center announced Dagatan’s inclusion on the award ceremony. His movie vies for the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film.
According to the report, Kenneth Dagatan expressed that he was lucky and privileged that his debut movie was among the seven feature films.
“It is a dream come true for me, especially “Ma” was my first film,” said the Cebuano filmmaker.
Based on the report, the Filipino horror movie will compete against six (6) feature movies for the film festival in New York. It would run from June 28 to July 14.
Among the films that made it to the cut were “Kim Yoon-seok’s Another Child” (South Korea), “Wu Nan’s Push and Shove” (China), “Moon Sungho’s 5 Million Dollar Life” (Japan), “Huang Chao-liang’s Han Dan” (Taiwan), “Katsumi Nojiri’s Lying to Mom” (Japan), “and Yi Ok-seop’s Maggie (South Korea).
