Last year, during the president’s State Of Nation Address (SONA) an unexpected turn of events shocked celebrities and witnesses as Gloria Macapagal Arroyo took the place as speaker of the House of Representatives.

This year, for the speakership race, Suarez stated that the speakership voting would be conducted better if the President refrained from choosing bets and leave the chamber’s independence.

Retiring Quezon 3rd District representative, revealed during a conversation with Inquirer expressed the importance of their independence:

Dapat talaga independent kami. That’s precisely the essence of democracy, ‘yung division ng legislative, executive tsaka judiciary. [We should really be independent. That’s precisely the essence of democracy, the division of legislative, executive and judiciary.]”

The district congressman also acknowledged that Duterte might just want to ensure the smooth passing of his prioritized legislation by sharing his choice for the positon. But Suarez maintained that the speakership voting would be better without Duterte meddling with the lower house’ affairs.

He explained how it would be better in his statement:

Mas maganda ‘yun para mabigyan ng options ‘yung mga member to decide on themselves di ‘yung they will be deciding because there was a nominee (referring to the bet chosen by the President). [It would be better so member’s would have the options to decide on themselves and not that they will be deciding because there was a nominee.]”

The statements from Suarez came after Presidential daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio told congressmen last Thursday to wait for the President’s choice on the Speakership position for the House in the 18th Congress.

This is according to an article from Inquirer.

In Sara Duterte’s statement, however, she also gave the congressmen the freedom to choose:

“Whenever Congressmen call me and ask, I always say to wait for the pronouncement of PRD on who is his choice. Otherwise, they decide based on their personal choice.”

That is all there is to it, at least for now. We’ll post updates as soon as we got them.
